IDIOMATIC EXPRESSION:

Chi fa da mangiare? Who is cooking?

Che cosa fai da mangiare? What are you cooking?

CUCINARE: a little more formal, for a fancier dinner or at a restaurant

Lui ha fame, lui ha molta fame.

WHY?
"tu mangi" instead of "tu mangii"?
"noi mangiamo" instead of "noi mangiiamo"?

If you expected "mangi-i", "mangi-iamo" you were right.
THe rule you learned states that the stem of "mangiare" is "mangi-", the suffix of tu is "-i".

However, in these circumstances the language gets rid of the redundant vowels.

Preferire belongs to the 3rd conjugation (-ire verbs)

Preferire and other similar verbs add the suffix "-isc-"before the verb endings of "io" "tu" "lui/lei" and "loro."
Other verbs following this pattern are: Finire (to finish) Pulire (to clean)
