Il Plurale (The Plural)

Il fratello => I fratelli

La sorella => Le sorelle

Il genitore => I genitori

nouns

Generally, masculine nouns ending with " - o " change to " - i "
fratello => fratelli

Feminine nouns ending with " - a " change to " - e "
sorella => sorelle

Nouns that in the singular end with " - e " change to " - i "
genitore => genitori

Just remember (but don't obsess):

figlio => figli (not figlii)

moglie => mogli (not moglii)

studio => studi (not studii)

POSSESSIVE (my, your)

The rule: you always use the article before the possessive:
la mia casa (my house), le mie ville (my villas)

il mio medico (my doctor), i miei avvocati (my lawyers)

The exception
in front of words that indicate family members or relatives,
in the singular, the article is dropped:

mio padre, mio fratello, mia sorella

i miei genitori, le mie sorelle

DON'T WORRY ABOUT EXCEPTIONS
Even if you make a "mistake" people will not think less of you. What matters is that you express concepts and that communicate information. It is by far more important that you learn to use the possessive always with the article than that you master some subtle exceptions and their sub-exceptions.

NOTA LINGUISTICA

Come si dice "children" in italiano?

Let's think about it: "male child" is "figlio," "female child" is "figlia".

The plural, therefore, is.....what is it?

Write it here

"Figli" (masculine) means "male children," and "figlie" "female children".

However, "figli" also means "children" in general.

Why?

Because in Italian when a plural count noun refers both to masculine AND feminine nouns, the MASCULINE form prevails.

Therefore if you want to say that you have two children, without specifying the gender, you will say : "Ho due figli."

As we saw, FIGLI also means "male children," but if you want to be specific about their gender you will have to say : "Ho due figli maschi," otherwise the gender will be left unspecified.

However, if you have two daughters, all you have to say is: "Ho due figlie".

FIGLIE is only and exclusively referring to a plural feminine, as are all feminine nouns.

The same applies to "zio" and "zia": plural "gli zii"; "nonno" e "nonna" is "nonni".

But this goes even further:

What do you suppose "fratelli" means?
It means "brothers" as well as ""brothers and sisters".

Thus, the very common question: "quanti fratelli hai?" doesn't ask how many males brothers you have, but how many"brothers and sisters."
